Market Snapshot: Bahrain

Read time: 10 mins

The Kingdom of Bahrain offers both public and private healthcare to its population of 1.5 million. The public healthcare sector dominates Bahrain’s healthcare system, accounting for approximately 76% of the total healthcare spend where Bahraini citizens benefit from fully covered, government-funded healthcare through the Social Health Insurance Fund Authority (SHIFA).

In contrast, private healthcare accounts for 24% of the healthcare spend in Bahrain and caters to expats through private insurance. To streamline healthcare access, the SEHATI scheme was introduced in September 2023, mandating private insurance coverage for foreign residents. This initiative aims to provide essential healthcare coverage while offering optional higher-tier packages for broader access.

Public and private entities are managed and regulated by key stakeholders, including the Supreme Council of Health, the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), and the Ministry of Health (MoH), which oversee the healthcare system.
